Tubi launched in UK by Fox Corp of Rupert Murdoch
Rupert Murdoch's Fox Corporation has introduced its ad-supported streaming platform, Tubi, in the UK market. Positioned to rival services like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Disney+, Channel 4's streaming platform, Tubi will offer over 20,000 films and TV episodes on-demand at launch. The content lineup includes titles from Disney, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures Entertainment, as well as original productions from Tubi.
Highlighted offerings currently available on Tubi UK include the Twilight series starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, the horror film Candyman, and the Tubi exclusive reality series House of Heat.
Fox claims that in the US, where Tubi boasts 80 million active users, it matches Disney+ in total viewing time. Current UK offerings also include blockbuster films like Olympus Has Fallen starring Gerard Butler, the comedy Happy Gilmore featuring Adam Sandler, and the horror comedy Happy Death Day.
British viewers can enjoy series such as Great British Menu, The Secret History of the British Garden, Paul Hollywood's Pies & Puds, and Mary Berry's Foolproof Cooking.
The streaming landscape is fiercely competitive, with providers vying for market share amidst financial challenges exacerbated by the cost of living crisis. While streaming services experienced a surge during the Covid-19 pandemic, with companies like Netflix, Disney, and Apple investing billions in high-budget productions to attract subscribers, growth has since slowed. Consequently, these companies are now focusing on cost reduction and profitability.
