WPP mandates four-day office attendance for employees worldwide

WPP, the world’s largest advertising and communications agency, has implemented a new workplace policy requiring employees to work from the office at least four days a week. The move, announced in a memo by CEO Mark Read, marks a notable shift in the company’s approach to hybrid work as it adjusts to post-pandemic norms.

Strengthening Collaboration and Creativity

Starting April, WPP employees globally will transition to this updated policy, with Read emphasizing the importance of in-person collaboration. “Our success depends on human connection, creativity, and relationships,” he said. “We achieve our best work when we are together in person.”

Previously, individual WPP agencies had autonomy in setting hybrid work guidelines, while staff at the company’s headquarters adhered to a three-day in-office requirement.

Business and Client-Centric Rationale

WPP’s decision aligns with observations linking increased office attendance to enhanced employee engagement, improved client feedback, and stronger financial outcomes. Read highlighted that many clients are adopting similar return-to-office expectations for their own teams and partners, further reinforcing the need for WPP to adapt.

Addressing Operational Challenges

With a workforce of over 110,000 across global offices and ownership of leading agencies such as Ogilvy, Grey, and GroupM, WPP faces logistical challenges in meeting these requirements. The company acknowledged the need for detailed planning to address capacity issues and ensure a smooth transition for employees.

Industry-Wide Implications

This policy positions WPP among a growing list of global employers advocating for greater in-office presence. As hybrid work continues to evolve, WPP’s shift underscores the industry’s emphasis on fostering creativity and collaboration through face-to-face interactions, even as it navigates logistical hurdles in adapting to the change.
