Google ordered to revamp mobile app business
Google must make significant changes to its mobile app business, giving Android users more freedom to download apps and make in-app purchases. US Judge James Donato's order mandates that Google allow users to download apps from third-party app stores and use alternative payment methods. This decision follows a previous court victory for Epic Games.
The tech giant is also prohibited from pre-installing its Play Store on Android devices or incentivizing device manufacturers to do so.
Google's shares fell after the ruling. The company has announced plans to appeal the decision and may request a stay of the order pending appeal. If the ruling stands, the changes will take effect in November.
This case adds to Google's legal woes. The company has faced accusations of anti-competitive practices in various markets, including web search, app distribution, and advertising technology.
