Govt cracks down on cricket and election season betting ads

The Indian government is taking action against disguised advertisements promoting illegal betting and gambling, which have become prevalent during cricket matches and elections. These ads violate guidelines set by the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA).

This move follows the widespread use of betting apps, especially during major events like the IPL and general elections. The government aims to identify violators and take legal action, including penalties and app bans.

The Public Gambling Act of 1867 prohibits betting and gambling in most parts of the country. Despite regulations, online betting platforms continue to advertise, raising concerns about potential financial and social harm, particularly among young people.

India's gaming industry is booming, projected to reach $7.5 billion by 2028. While the online gaming market flourishes, the government seeks to regulate it effectively.

After reviewing adherence to existing regulations, the government will consult with online gaming platforms to strengthen regulations. This consultation aims to protect users from addiction and financial risks.
