Meta removes millions of posts in India for violating policies
Social media giant Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, revealed in its monthly compliance report that it took down a significant amount of content on Facebook and Instagram in India during May. This action was taken to comply with the IT Rules 2021, which require large social media platforms to publish monthly reports on their content moderation efforts.
Content Breakdown:
Facebook: Over 15.6 million pieces of content were removed across 13 policy violations.
Instagram: More than 5.8 million pieces of content were removed across 12 policy violations.
User Reporting and Resolution:
Facebook:
22,251 reports were submitted through the Indian grievance mechanism.
Tools were provided to users to resolve issues in 13,982 cases. These tools included reporting channels, data download options, and hacked account recovery options.
Of the remaining reports requiring specialist review (8,269), Meta analyzed content and addressed 5,583 complaints.
Instagram:
14,373 reports were submitted through the Indian grievance mechanism.
Tools were provided to users to resolve issues in 7,300 cases.
Of the remaining reports requiring specialist review (7,073), Meta analyzed content and addressed 4,172 complaints.
Taking Action:
Meta clarified that "taking action" could involve removing content entirely from the platform or covering potentially disturbing content with warnings.
