In this updated series, we aim to explore how women leaders adeptly manage their teams and overcome challenges in the dynamic landscape of their respective industries.

In an exclusive interaction with Adgully, Charuvi Agrawal, an Indian painter & Director, CDL (Charuvi Design Labs), speaks about the role and scope of women leaders in today’s market ecosystem, leadership roles, gender sensitivity and inclusion in the new normal, maintaining a successful work-life balance, and more.

How do you perceive the expansion of roles and opportunities for women leaders in the current market ecosystem, and what factors do you believe have contributed to this shift?

I perceive the expansion of roles and opportunities for women leaders in the current market ecosystem as a remarkable and necessary shift. This transformation is driven by a combination of factors, including increased awareness of gender equality, the dismantling of traditional stereotypes, and the advocacy for diversity and inclusion. The digital revolution has also played a crucial role, enabling women to leverage technology to amplify their voices and showcase their talents on a global stage. Additionally, supportive policies and mentorship programs have been instrumental in providing women with the resources and networks needed to succeed. This shift is not only beneficial for women, but also enriches the market ecosystem by bringing diverse perspectives and innovative solutions.

As a prominent female leader in the industry, how have your personal and professional experiences shaped your leadership style, and what unique strengths do you think women bring to leadership roles?

My personal and professional experiences have profoundly shaped my leadership style, instilling in me the values of resilience, empathy, and creativity. Growing up in India, I was inspired by the rich cultural heritage and narratives that emphasized the strength and wisdom of women. My academic journey, from Delhi College of Arts to Sheridan Institute in Canada, exposed me to diverse artistic techniques and technological advancements, which I integrate into my work at Charuvi Design Labs.

Women bring unique strengths to leadership roles, such as emotional intelligence, collaboration, and a holistic approach to problem-solving. These qualities enable us to build cohesive teams and foster inclusive environments where creativity and innovation can thrive. Personally, I strive to lead by example, encouraging open communication and empowering my team to achieve their fullest potential.

What is your mantra for maintaining a successful work-life balance in the new normal, and how do you manage the demands of your professional and personal life effectively?

Maintaining a successful work-life balance in the new normal requires a proactive and mindful approach. My mantra is to prioritize and integrate my professional and personal commitments harmoniously. I set clear boundaries, allocate time for self-care, and ensure that I am fully present in both my work and personal life.

Effective time management is crucial. I delegate tasks where possible and leverage technology to streamline workflows. It is also important to cultivate a supportive network, both professionally and personally, to share responsibilities and provide mutual encouragement. Regularly engaging in creative pursuits outside of work helps me stay inspired and rejuvenated, allowing me to bring fresh perspectives to my professional endeavours.

In your opinion, what qualities make women particularly effective in crisis management, and how have you leveraged these strengths in your own career?

Women are particularly effective in crisis management due to their innate ability to remain calm under pressure, their empathetic approach to leadership, and their strong communication skills. These qualities enable women to navigate crises with a composed and compassionate demeanor, ensuring that all stakeholders are heard and valued.

In my own career, I have leveraged these strengths by fostering an open and supportive work environment at Charuvi Design Labs. During challenging times, I prioritize transparent communication and collaborative problem-solving, which helps to mitigate stress and encourages innovative solutions. My empathetic leadership style ensures that my team feels supported and motivated, even in the face of adversity.

How can organizations foster gender sensitivity and inclusion in the new normal, and what strategies can they implement to effectively encourage and groom women leaders, especially during challenging times?

Organizations can foster gender sensitivity and inclusion by implementing comprehensive policies and practices that promote equality and diversity. This includes providing equal opportunities for career advancement, offering mentorship and sponsorship programs, and ensuring fair representation in leadership positions.

To encourage and groom women leaders, organizations should create an inclusive culture that values diverse perspectives. Providing flexible work arrangements, promoting work-life balance, and offering professional development opportunities are essential strategies. Additionally, addressing unconscious biases through training and creating safe spaces for open dialogue can significantly contribute to a more inclusive workplace.

Could you share examples of innovative contributions made by women in the animation and immersive arts industry, and how do you think these contributions are reshaping the future of the field?

Women in the animation and immersive arts industry have made numerous innovative contributions that are reshaping the future of the field. For instance, women artists and directors are pushing the boundaries of storytelling by incorporating diverse cultural narratives and pioneering new techniques in animation and virtual reality.

At Charuvi Design Labs, we have created works like ‘The Legend of Hanuman’, which blend traditional Indian mythology with cutting-edge animation technology. This approach not only captivates global audiences, but also sets new standards for visual storytelling. Additionally, our exhibition, “Shakti”, features artworks such as ‘Lumena’ and ‘Eterna’, celebrating fierce feminine energy and highlighting the powerful role of women in shaping the artistic landscape.

These contributions are fostering a more inclusive and enriched industry, where diverse voices and innovative perspectives are celebrated, paving the way for future generations of women creators to thrive.
