Our aim is to be the Shah Rukh Khan of Generative AI: Saket Dandotia

Adgully has been turning the spotlight on the entrepreneurs who fought against all odds to bring their dreams to fruition in our special series – START-UP STARS. We at Adgully wholeheartedly support the ‘Vocal for Local’ movement and have been featuring numerous local/ homegrown businesses, brands, and Apps in the country launched in the last few years.

In conversation with Adgully, Saket Dandotia, Founder and CEO, Onetab, shares the origins of Onetab, challenges in the current market environment for AI-based SaaS solutions, the landscape of the Indian startup ecosystem, and much more.

Could you tell us what inspired you to start Onetab and what problems it set out to sort?

After experiencing the challenges of managing updates and collaboration across different platforms while working with various technology companies, I recognised the need for a unified solution. The idea occurred during a trip to Goa when I couldn’t access Trello to check ticket statuses. Realising the potential for a platform where developers, product managers, and clients could seamlessly collaborate, I embarked on a journey to create Onetab. After six months of intense discussions, agreements, and disagreements we launched Onetab – a unified platform that keeps everyone in the loop, fostering better collaboration and productivity for all stakeholders.

What specific challenges do you perceive in the current market environment for AI-based SaaS solutions, and how has the landscape evolved over the last few years?

As the serial entrepreneur and a founder of an AI-based SaaS company, I recognize several challenges in the current market environment. One significant challenge is the increasing demand for personalized and scalable AI solutions while ensuring data privacy and security.

The AI software market is growing fast, but it is not without challenges. Teaching customers about the real benefits of AI can be hard. Some people think AI will solve all their problems instantly, but it is really about making things more efficient, not performing miracles. Another problem is finding enough skilled people who understand AI and can connect it to business needs. But things are getting better. Customers are getting smarter about AI, and it is becoming easier to use with ready-made models and online platforms. The future looks good, but we need to be realistic about what AI can do and make sure we have the right people to make it work.

Could you tell us about the landscape of the Indian startup ecosystem and how it is growing?

I have seen our startup scene grow a lot. India is now the world’s 3rd biggest hub for startups, with over 100 unicorns. It is a big deal and lots of money is coming in from investors who see the potential in our talent and ideas.

One of the most notable trends in the Indian startup landscape is the diversification of sectors. While technology startups continue to dominate, we’re also seeing significant growth in sectors such as fintech, healthtech, edtech, and agritech. This diversification reflects the evolving needs and opportunities in the Indian market and presents exciting prospects for innovation and growth.

However, the Indian startup ecosystem still faces challenges, including access to talent, regulatory hurdles, and intense competition. Addressing these challenges requires collaboration between startups, government agencies, educational institutions, and industry stakeholders.

Overall, the Indian startup ecosystem is vibrant, dynamic, and full of potential. I’m excited about the opportunities ahead and committed to driving innovation, growth, and positive impact in India and beyond. We are building tools to make workflows smoother, so our developers and entrepreneurs can focus on what they do best – creating amazing things.

As the landscape of AI technology continues to evolve rapidly, what notable shifts or developments have you observed in the market, and how is Onetab adapting its strategies to stay ahead of the curve?

The current AI market is like a rollercoaster ride through a big tech jungle. At Onetab, we’ve been watching closely as things change. What advice would you like to give to young budding entrepreneurs in your sector?

As a seasoned CEO with 15 years of experience in nurturing startups and achieving successful exits, here are five pieces of advice for young budding entrepreneurs in the tech sector:

  1. Focus on Problem Solving: Always start with a clear understanding of the problem you aim to solve. Your product or service should address a genuine need or pain point in the market. Invest time in thorough market research and customer validation to ensure you’re building something that people actually want.
  2. Build a Strong Team: Surround yourself with talented individuals who complement your skills and share your vision. A diverse team with expertise in different areas will bring fresh perspectives and help navigate challenges more effectively. I am here because I was fortunate to have great team.
  3. Stay Agile and Adapt: The tech industry evolves rapidly, so it’s crucial to remain agile and adaptable. Be open to feedback, iterate quickly, and embrace change. Stay updated on emerging technologies.
  4. Prioritize Customer Experience: Customer satisfaction is key to long-term success. Listen to customer feedback, iterate based on their needs, and strive to exceed their expectations. Building strong relationships with your customers can lead to loyal advocates who help drive growth through referrals and positive reviews.
  5. Learn from failures: Every startup faces setbacks. Don’t dwell on mistakes, analyze them, learn, and iterate your approach. Remember, exits are just chapters, not the whole story.
